The Horse Guai questline is the longest-running side quest in Black Myth: Wukong — one conversation per chapter across five chapters, paying out an exclusive transformation (Dark Thunder) at the end. It's also the easiest to lose without noticing: once you defeat Chapter 5's Keeper of Flaming Mountains, any unfinished progress is frozen forever.
Check your Horse Guai progress before finishing each chapter — and treat Chapter 5 as urgent.
Stop 1 — Chapter 1: Bamboo Grove, back hills
The quest begins at the back hills of the Bamboo Grove. From the shrine, head toward the back hills to find him. Talk until the dialogue repeats — he'll say he's leaving. Stop one done.
Stop 2 — Chapter 2: Sandgate Village, Valley of Despair
In Chapter 2, teleport to the Valley of Despair shrine in Sandgate Village and find him from there. Same rule: talk until nothing new comes up, then continue the main story.
Stop 3 — Chapter 3: outside the Mahavira Hall
At the end of Chapter 3's New Thunderclap Temple, you'll unlock the shrine right at the hall's gate. The Horse Guai waits nearby — third conversation.
Stop 4 — Chapter 4: Juexiang Cliff
If you kept up with the first three stops, this one is nearly unmissable — he's on the main path.
Catching up late? Teleport to the Juexiang Cliff shrine (绝响崖), turn around, and walk back the way you came. Talk, then move on to Chapter 5.
Stop 5 — Chapter 5: the valley entrance (claim the transformation)
In Chapter 5, teleport to the Valley Entrance shrine and push forward to trigger the final event. To stay spoiler-free, we skip the story beats: put on the Fireproof Mantle, walk straight ahead, and the voice trigger grants the transformation.
Fail condition & recovery
- Hard deadline: defeating the Keeper of Flaming Mountains (a mandatory Chapter 5 boss). Any unfinished conversations die with him;
- Already missed? No in-playthrough fix — New Game+, or restore a backup save from before that fight;
- Good habit: make a manual save (or cloud-save snapshot) before every chapter's final boss.
